The oil industry can rest easy knowing that we have a group of budding engineers here at Chambers Academy to clean their messes. We teamed up with 4-H for our first ever “Ecobot Challenge”. The objective was to clean a model “oil spill” using a robot made out of the head of a toothbrush. Students in grades 5-9 were given a toothbrush, a pager motor, a watch battery, and double-sided tape to create their petroleum scrubbers. We also had some Juniors and Seniors participating and helping out.

Our students took to it with little instruction. And despite the limited selection of parts, there was quite a bit of creativity and ingenuity shown. No two robots were alike. And they were all named!

Congratulations is in order to Emily (Senior) and Heather (Junior) for cleaning the most “oil” (rice was used as our oil replica) in a two minute time period.

We plan to work with 4-H in the future on more projects like this!
