Chambers Academy Family,
In light of various school system announcements regarding the upcoming solar eclipse, which is set to impact our area for a few spectacular minutes on August 21, 2017, the following is our official statement regarding how our school will handle things on that day. The event will occur during school; sixth period to be exact, which spans 1:00 P.M.-1:53 P.M. Please consider the following bullet points before the event:
- The school has purchased enough certified safety glasses for every student and faculty member. Safety glasses are necessary for viewing the eclipse as direct exposure of the naked eye to the phenomenon poses a significant risk of retina damage. Parents are strongly encouraged to stress the importance of wearing the safety glasses to their children.
- Because the event occurs after lunch, student check-outs after 11:30 A.M. do not count as full-day absences, and check-outs to view the eclipse under the supervision of parents will be considered excused absences.
- Though it will not be encouraged, if you insist that your child remain at school, and do not want them to be exposed to the outdoors during the eclipse, the school will make arrangements to accommodate such a request.
- The school will be treating this event as an educational opportunity; a possible once-in-a-lifetime, hands-on science project.
We want this event to be as safe, educational, fun, and memorable as possible for our students. Please feel free to contact the school with any question regarding this matter. Your feedback is appreciated.
