Sixth Grade: Goals, STEM, and more!

We have been super busy in sixth grade. We have been setting individual and classroom goals, making action plans to reach those goals, and working toward them. As a matter of fact, we have almost reached our first classroom reading goal for the month of August- 50 books. So far, the class has read 43 books collectively which is AWESOME! If the class reaches their goal of 50, we will definitely celebrate! While all of the students have been working toward this goal, the stand out student that has been instrumental in getting so close to reaching this goal is Keegan. He has a true passion for reading and has helped his class tremendously!
Just as reading is important, I also believe hands-on experiences and developing critical thinking skills are important. This is why STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects have been incorporated into the sixth grade’s weekly routine. So far, the class has participated in different group activities such as building a tower made from plastic cups and building a freestanding structure from dry spaghetti noodles and a marshmallow. These activities have required the students to work together, discuss ideas, and implement those ideas. Most of the time, there are many failures and re-attempts, but they are learning and loving it!
Some of the students have exemplified good leadership and engineering skills during these activities. These students include Olivia, Dylan, Breanne, and Gavin. I am sure many more students will show their skills as the opportunity presents itself!
