This month has been a blast for Kindergarten. We began a new reading program back in January. This program is called “secret stories”. In this particular program, we learn all of the tricks to reading particular sounds. The students have picked up each story presented and moved right along to the next. Learning a great deal of reading tricks has lead us into our love for reading and testing on AR books! Eben Sasser is our top AR reader coming in with almost 15 points for the month of February! Wow, great job, Eben! All students are doing a great job at earning points. I have never witnessed such an eager group of young learners. They love learning so much. We have also moved into discussing the order in which events happen. The students have been given the opportunity to create their own timeline of their life to share with the class. As far as math goes, we are moving right along. The students have moved into simple subtraction within the past couple of weeks. We have also learned place value of numbers 11-19. Breaking down numbers by 10’s and 1’s as well as developing simple addition formulas to support the place value system. For example, the number is 12 (1 group of 10 and 2 groups of 1, 10+2=12). The students have picked up very quickly on this concept. This week we also began discussing parts of a sentence. We began with nouns and then moved into verbs. They picked up on the concept very quickly, so we took the process to the next level and began discussing subjects and predicates. I could not be more proud to call myself the teacher of this wonderful group of students.
