The physical education program at Chambers Academy is designed to teach students the skills, knowledge, and attitudes essential to live a healthy lifestyle and select healthy and safe behaviors. We are very excited to announce that new equipment has been ordered to enhance the students’ time during physical education. Our main focus is to provide quality physical education programs in order to increase our students’ physical competence, self-responsibility, and enjoyment of physical activity that will carry on through their lifetime.
In grades K-2 physical education we are focusing on students’ locomotor and motor skills. We are also encouraging regular participation in all classes. It is vital that the students in these grade levels understand the difference between physical education class and recess. The students should also learn how to exhibit responsible personal and social behavior during class.
In grades 3-6 we are incorporating strategical games that combine motor skills along with aspects of team work and cooperation. We use modified sport games that allow us to help inform the students of rules of different sports. One of our main focuses is to make sure that the students understand that there is more than only one way to achieve their desired goal in a game, but it takes collaboration with their team to effectively accomplish these goals.
In grades 7-8 the students are challenged with the aspect of a sport education program. In sports education the students are presented a new sport. The students are split up into teams and each student is assigned a role on their team. Roles are chosen among the team making sure everyone has a job to do. The roles include team captain, assistant captain, fitness leader, and even referees. Sport education allows the students to be more autonomous during their P.E. time. Every student must perform their job, or points will be deducted from their team. There will be a regular season, as well as a post season, to determine a champion.
Overall this is going to be a great year in physical education. We are excited to be able to teach such a great group of students. If there are any other questions or concerns please feel free to email me at dnessmith@chambersacademy.com.
