This has been such a positive, new beginning in the middle of the year for Kindergarten. The students have adjusted well and we are off to a great start. We have mastered our letters and sounds and are now preparing to become fluent readers. In our classroom we spend most of the morning in our reading center rotations. These centers consist of a variety of different things. We have a small group center where the students meet with me and we learn a variety of different things. This week in small group we are learning to read words that contain the short u vowel. We also have a seat-work station where students complete independent work. Other stations include ABC/word building center, sentence building, and our reading center. The students know exactly where to find their assignments for each center and have adjusted well to rotating within the centers every 15-20 minutes. During the end of the day, we tackle Math, Science, and Social Studies. This week in math we have been learning simple addition and greater than, less than. In Science, we have learned and discussed differences between living and nonliving things. In Social Studies we discussed goods and services and the difference between the two. We discussed how Kindergartners could be a service in our community. After this discussion, we put our services in play by creating Valentine’s Day cards for the nursing home. Overall, this has been such a wonderful experience for the children and myself.
