Learning with Robots!

Through a partnership with 4-H, we’ve gotten a donation of three Lego Mindstorm robotics kits with LOTS of extras. If you don’t know what that is, understand that this isn’t a child’s toy. This kit includes not only a computer and motors, but also sensors that detect light, sound, and even color. That means students can build a robot that walks when you wave your hand in front of it or a car that follows a black line on a white background. On top of all that, the computer can connect to bluetooth devices, connect to a wifi signal, and can even be controlled using smartphone apps.
A few 12th graders are building and programming sets right now in order to see what these kits are capable of and how we may incorporate them into class projects and competitions between classes. Students will not only have the opportunity to learn building/engineering skills, but they will also develop skills such as team work/collaboration, planning, troubleshooting, and logic/programming.
We’re hoping to be able to utilize these for years to come in both our high school classes and upper elementary. When we have projects, we will make sure to post them with pictures!
