Don’t Let it Be a Grinchy Christmas

As the Christmas season draws near, you have to ask yourself, what is the real “reason for the season?” I have conducted the same lesson for three years now, “What is the difference between wants and needs?” I ask the kids what do they “need” for Christmas. The typical answers; I want a puppy, a truck, a gun, an Elsa “Frozen” sing along CD, complete with life size Elsa doll and clothes…. Then I ask them what they “want” for Christmas. They give me that “I just told you, weren’t you listening?” look. I then begin to teach the differences between “wants” and “needs”. This is by far one of my favorite lessons to teach. You soon see a child’s mind begin to work. I share stories about children who do not have a home or parents to celebrate Christmas with… and all of a sudden, that Elsa doll doesn’t seem like such a necessity. Throughout the month of December, we discuss “needs” and “wants”… Typically by Christmas the students are telling one another what is important, and what is something we can live without. It is such a blessing to see how this lesson can change the way they think and treat the Christmas Season. Just remember that others are not as fortunate as we are…
