This is a very jolly time of year. The air is filled with laughter and cheer. However, more often then not we forget about the real reason for the season. I hear my students say, “Oh, I just need this toy!” or “I have to have that!” During this season I try my best to explain to my students the difference between wants and needs. “Yes, we want those toys, but you don’t need them.” When I say this I typically get a funny look or a “deer in head light” stare. “What do you mean we don’t need that toy, of course we do, Mrs. Williams?” Well, since this is the week before Christmas I feel that it is my job to teach them what a real need is and explain to them that not all children are as blessed to have toys during the holidays. The students seem to have a grasp on what to be thankful for, but I hope to convey that needs are something we can’t live without and wants are items that we would like to have but don’t actually need in order to live. It is a tough concept, even for some adults to understand, but hopefully my tender- hearted children will understand and really learn the real reason for the season. It is not the toys or presents we get, but the time we get to spend with those we love that bring true joy to our lives. Merry Christmas, God Bless, and have a safe and happy New Year!
