Stuffed with Thanks!

“Let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!”

For every day in the month of November I write down one thing I am thankful or grateful for. Day 1: God, Day 2: Family… So on and so forth. I try to teach my students throughout the year, not just in the month of November, to always be thankful for the things they have. However, for the next two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving; Emily, Hunter, Kayla, Cameron, Kent, Keila, Beth, Spencer, Drew, Talley, and Halle will learn even more about being thankful and why we celebrate this holiday of giving. The students will dive into the history of Thanksgiving and where it first began. They will learn about the hardships people had to face back when  Thanksgiving first came about. They will also learn of the good that came from the friendships that were made at this time. The First Thanksgiving is a critical point in our history and I want my students to understand why. I do not want my students to only think Thanksgiving is about turkey and great “Black Friday” sales. However, food has always been associated with this holiday and turkey is a major part of our Thanksgiving tradition.  Instead of ignoring the facts, I am going to teach my students about all the traditional foods that were eaten at that first Thanksgiving, and explain to them why they were so important to the Pilgrims and Indians.
I believe that fellowship and thankfulness are the key characteristics of Thanksgiving, and I hope that each of my students walk away with a full heart and a mind filled with thanks.

I have given my class the challenge to come up with five things they are thankful for and I offer you the same challenge. Think about what matters most to you and remember to always show thanks to those around you!

God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving! Love the K-5 Crew
